More records fall under the power of KGSN
After Jackson Stewart's stunning win a few Sundays ago at the opener of the Commerce Bank Triple Crown in Lancaster, the Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada Pro Cycling Team had high hopes for today's first-ever drive of the team van by New Zealander Jason Allen.
And by far and away, the tall kiwi exceded all expectations to finish the drive with a brand new all comers record,of 268.5 miles at 12.36am EST, for a full tank of unleaded petrol, shattering former world record holder jonathan k harrises old mark of 260miles set earlier in the year by a massive 8.5 miles.
whilst there is numerous debates flying at the moment to how far Allen could have continued his dream run for(had to stop for host housing commitments) there is no doubt about the mans stunning ability to pilot a vehicle through the trickiest of wind and weight conditions. Allen had to contend with 12 bikes across the roof, plus 6 wheels, plus the weight of another 8 bikes inside,as well as a co-pilot and navigator(non other than the former record holder himself-harris) from the dangerous drive chicago to rochester new york. While it would seem harrises former world record was acheived without the added weight of bikes on the roof and the added weight of a co-pilot,Allen excelled and triumphed through to a some what unexpected feat-we catch up with the peoples champion, moments after he has reached his host housing,to try to get a brief interview to see who really is the man behind the man,and how his world record will change his life
firstly-jason,congratulations,what a massive effort, how do you feel now you are the outright champion of van mileage?
thanks very much,to be honest i never expected to become the peoples champion over night,it was my first effort at the long distance van drive,an event i didnt think i was going to compete in this year, but certain things happened behind the scenes, and i ended up being able to have a shot at harrises title and, well, im pretty stoked to be able to walk away from the event with a world record.
yes it certainly is an amazing feat, tell us how you felt leading into the event
well it felt like any other day to be honest,i had been co piloting for a while for harris, and i guess you could say he rested on his laurels for a bit and decided to let the rookie take a shot at driving, and he is now rueing that mistake let me assure you,he just lost his world title,he told me that "half of this game is 90% mental" afterwards, which, well, confused me.
i bet,it was your first time driving the van, i heard there was a bit of ill feeling in the van on your way to the record, talk us through it
well,im not sure i want to discuss it in this forum, but since you have bought it up i feel i should tell it like it is,before harris can blow it out of proportion. when i was about quarter of a tank into the attempt, harris feigned sleep and appeared to doze off in the co pilots seat beside me,which was fine,it let me fully concentrate on the drive so i just turned the music up and concentrated on being smooth through the turns, you see to get the record, its all about the smoothness, but anyways,i didnt notice but i get the feeling now he was really watching me like a hawk, once i got down to about half a tank, he started to play around with the air conditioning, even though it was 10-30 at night,i mean he was coming up with all sorts of excuses afterwards that his hands slipped and so on,but i didnt even know he had mucked around with the settings until i felt a cool breeze on my neck,i couldnt feel it on my hands or face or anything, after dale ernhardt died, the racing restrictions are very tight as you know,so i had the mandatory full face racing helmet and fire suit and gloves on,so to be honest,im going to call it straight here and say harris tried to cheat me a few miles, and you can quote me on that.
wow, thats quite sensational, your own co pilot trying to knock your mileage
yes i know,to be honest it was disgusting.i felt pretty violated, hes my co pilot and he tried to screw me
what you mean with the air con trick or literally?
no no no,not literally, last thing we need is gay rumours in this tough mans sport,i just thought it was pretty low to go for the old switch on the aircon trick is all,i mean i was spotted with a rainbow on my t-shirt the other day,but there was nothing in that at all
well,it looks like a long road back for this friendship,do you think you will speak to him again?
look,i think he just got caught up in the heat of the moment,he saw his record going and he was clutching at straws,i think we will be fine, nothing a few Sierra Nevadas wont fix
that was a pretty lame plug for your sponsor
well, you see, with josh our marketing manager scrutinising everything that we right or print now,i dont want him telling tales to higher management, even though everyone should just be stoked i got the record, there will always be knockers out there, its just life.
what did you think when you smashed the old record?
that im going to go all the way
all the way?
yep, how much you wanna make a bet that i can drive over them there mountains? i wish i had just driven earlier. you ever wish you could go back in time? man,if harris had put me in the fourth quarter,we would have taken state.even back in 82 i could throw a pigskin quarter mile.seriously though i think im going to go to nascar.i think i can redneck myself up enough to be accepted, maybe ill get a cowboy hat and drink budweiser,i reckon ill make it all the way
well you heard it here first folks, thanks again jason for this interview, you must be shattered,
yeah im shattered, its been an emotional day, like a rollercoaster really,it hasnt sunk in,maybe by tomorrow when i wake up,ill know i dominated, like just fully dominated this stuff, rock on.
rock on indeed
